Zimbabwe Cricket drops Sean Williams, reveals batter has entered rehab for drug addiction

HARARE – Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has announced the dismissal of veteran cricketer Sean Williams.

This comes after ZC revealed that the experienced batter has entered a rehabilitation centre after admitting to struggling with drug addiction.

According to ZC, Williams voluntarily checked himself into rehab after confessing that he was battling substance abuse, a situation that led to his failure to report for national duty.

Williams recently withdrew from the Zimbabwe squad on the eve of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025 in Harare, citing personal reasons.

However, reports suggest that ZC launched an internal investigation following his unexpected withdrawal.

During the inquiry, Williams reportedly admitted to his drug problem and sought professional help.

In a statement, ZC confirmed that Williams’ central contract will not be renewed when it expires in December 2025, citing breaches of professionalism and conduct.

“During an internal investigation to understand the reasons for his unavailability, Williams disclosed that he has been struggling with drug addiction and has voluntarily entered rehabilitation,” read part of the statement.

“ZC expects all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and compliance with team protocols and anti-doping regulations. After careful consideration, ZC has concluded that Williams will no longer be considered for national selection.

“Consequently, it is not feasible to continue his national contract beyond its expiry on 31 December 2025.”

Williams, who made his international debut in 2005, has been one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent performers across all formats and previously served as national team captain.
