BINDURA – The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has announced the death of Brigadier General (Retired) Shadreck Ndabambi, who passed away at his farm in Glendale early Wednesday morning.

According to a statement by ZNA director of Public Relations, Colonel Alphios Makotore, Brig Gen Ndabambi collapsed at home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Bindura General Hospital.

“The Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe is saddened to announce the untimely death of Brigadier General (Retired) Shadreck Ndabambi,” he said.

“Brig Gen Ndabambi passed on at his farm in Glendale early this morning. He collapsed at home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Bindura General Hospital.”

Mourners have gathered at his farm in Glendale to pay their respects.

This latest passing marks a series of sudden deaths among serving and retired senior army officials in Zimbabwe.

Last month, Retired Brigadier-General Michael Chaminuka died at the age of 62 after a short illness, followed by the death of Colonel Andrew Kabaira, who succumbed to a short illness on July 21 at the age of 64.

In May, Retired Brigadier-General Lameck Francisco Mutanda passed away in the UK after a prolonged illness.

In April, four members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), including Brigadier-General Shadreck Vezha, died in a head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo road.

The frequency of these deaths has raised questions, with former opposition Member of Parliament Fadzayi Mahere, wondering if it is normal for the ZNA to be burying a hero every week, often a Brigadier-General.

Mahere stated last week: “Genuine question – is it normal that they’re burying a hero of theirs every week? One that’s almost always a Brigadier?”

The country has lost many army senior retired and serving members since the 2017 military coup that ousted the late former President Robert Mugabe.
