Second Vice President (VP) Kembo Mohadi is a disappointed man. His disappointment comes after Zimbabwe’s failure to host international matches on home soil.
He revealed this during his tour of the iconic Mbare based football venue Rufaro Stadium on Thursday morning.
Mohadi did not mince his words saying the country’s failure to host international matches (especially in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers) is not good news to his ears.
“Failing to host international games is an egg on our faces. It is embarrassing to learn that we are not allowed to host matches on home soil because all our stadiums don’t meet the FIFA and CAF requirements,” lamented Mohadi.
The former deputy minister in the local governance promised that government will chip in to the renovations that are currently taking place at Rufaro Stadium.

He added: “We assist the City of Harare to spruce up Rufaro (Stadium) to a state of the are sporting facility.
“It embarrassing to learn that we are not being allowed to host international matches because we don’t have stadiums that have bucket seats.
“But as government, we have taken it upon ourselves that we need to correct this. We will lend a shoulder to the City of Harare, support you to make Rufaro a world class venue, its not for Harare but for the entire nation of Zimbabwe.”

Mohadi who was then deputy minister of sports when two grandstands at Rufaro were constructed in “a short space of time” for the 1995 All Africa games, further insisted that government will tirelessly work around the clock to have ‘all’ stadiums fixed.
“When we hosted the All Africa games in 1995, two wings of this (Rufaro Stadium) sporting facilities were built in a short space of time. Why would it be difficult for us now?
“Hosting international tournaments on home soil is a joy to us. There is not much that needs to be done (at Rufaro Stadium), with the scope of work that I witnessed here we can spruce up this facility, its not much staff that needs to be done, most of the work is done.”

He applauded the Harare City Council through Mayor Jacob Mafume for the “stride they have taken to spruce up and modernise Rufaro Stadium”.
“They have managed to meet some of the requirements that are required by FIFA and CAF. If we are united, definitely development will follow us, let’s be united. This is not about political parties but development.
“Sport is one of the pillars towards our attainment of the vision 2030, it plays a huge role. Let us not disappoint the people of Zimbabwe by not giving them that service they require of us.”
His remarks come after the Warriors are scheduled to host Lesotho and South Africa in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in June.
