MUTARE – Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, journalist Fanuel Chinowaita, lawyer Nyasha Gerald and Morgan Ncube were arrested in Mutare while mobilising support for the Constitutional Defenders Forum (CDF) that he leads.

The CDF is mobilising against planned constitutional amendments which critics say could expand executive authority and weaken existing democratic safeguards.

Authorities have yet to clarify the charges, if any, raising fresh concerns about the treatment of opposition figures, the role of the media, and the space for civic activism.

The incident is expected to draw scrutiny both locally and from regional observers as debate over the constitutional changes intensifies.
