Zimbabwe media fraternity mourns broadcast legend John Masuku

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s media fraternity is in mourning following the death of legendary broadcast journalist John Masuku, affectionately known as “Ndwandwe”, who passed away on Friday at the age of 70.

Masuku passed away in the early hours of Friday, 13 February 2026, at his home in Mabelreign, Harare. His death coincided with World Radio Day, an occasion he is said to have marked annually with colleagues in celebration of the medium he deeply loved.

The Masuku family confirmed his passing in a statement, describing it as sudden and unexpected.

“The Masuku family confirms with profound sadness the passing of Mr John Masuku, who passed away at his home in Mabelreign on the morning of Friday, 13 February 2026,” the statement read.

“Though he had a known heart condition, Mr Masuku was in good health and going about his normal activities. His passing has come as a complete shock to the family, and we are still trying to process this sudden and unexpected loss.”

Masuku began his media career in 1974 at the then Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation, now the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), at its Mbare Studios in Harare. He remained active in journalism for 52 years.

Colleagues have described him as a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s media industry, known for his commitment to radio broadcasting, mentorship of young journalists and service to communities.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists said it “is deeply saddened by the passing of veteran broadcaster and journalist John Masuku.

“His lifelong dedication to journalism and broadcasting enriched our profession and inspired many. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues.”

Former opposition MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda also paid tribute to the legendary journalist.

“I am saddened by the death of John Masuku. I worked closely with him when I was the chairperson of the media parliamentary committee. He was a fine journalist. May his soul rest in peace and condolences to the family,” he wrote on X.

Mourners have gathered at his residence at Number 1 Pat Palmer Owen Drive, Cotswold Hills, Mabelreign.

The family has requested privacy as they grieve and indicated that details regarding funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.
