Russia confirms blocking Whatsapp and forcing citizens to use State backed app Max

MOSCOW – Russia has confirmed blocking Whatsapp and forcing its citizens to use State backed app Max. Telegram which is also highly popular in Russia and used widely by its forces in Ukraine has also been restricted by Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor.

The pretext being used by Russia is that both WhatsApp and Telegram have failed to comply with laws requiring them to store Russian users’ data on servers located within the country.

“Trying to isolate over 100 million users from private and secure communication is a backwards step and can only lead to less safety for people in Russia,” Whatsapp said in a statement in response to the crackdown.
