Sacked Cameroon coach refuses to leave post, recalls Andre Onana to AFCON squad
YAOUNDE – Cameroon’s preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have descended into turmoil after sacked coach Marc Brys named a 28-man squad that includes Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Brys, who was appointed by the Sports Ministry but dismissed by Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o last week, insists he is still the legitimate head coach and has continued announcing squads and plans.
Fecafoot accuse Brys of misconduct, including “subterfuge” and encouraging players to defy the federation, and have appointed assistant David Pagou as interim coach.
Pagou’s squad excludes Onana, creating two competing national team lists.
The dispute has deepened a power struggle between the Sports Ministry and Fecafoot, causing confusion among players and threatening Cameroon’s AFCON preparations.
With Thursday’s final squad deadline approaching, government and federation officials are in talks to resolve the crisis, but it remains unclear which squad will be recognised.
Onana who joined Barcelona’s youth system in 2010 before playing for Ajax and Inter Milan, endured a difficult spell at Manchester United before being shipped out on loan Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor.
