POLOKWANE – Lesotho beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in their CAF World Cup Qualifier – Group Stage – Group C match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa courtesy of an injury time goal from Hlompho Kalake (90+3).
The Warriors were aiming for their first victory in the World Cup qualifiers when they faced Lesotho this evening in Polokwane.
Out of the nine Group C matches played so far, the Warriors have managed five draws and four losses.
They were desperate to secure a win in their final World Cup qualifier to avoid an unwanted record.
Speaking ahead of the match, Warriors coach Michael Nees said his side is eager to win in order to boost confidence ahead of the AFCON tournament in December in Morocco.
“Despite it being a dead rubber match, it remains important to us, so it’s a must-win. Remember, we are preparing for the AFCON finals, and victories will help us build confidence,” said Nees before the match.
The German tactician also hinted that he could make a few changes to his starting lineup, citing fatigue and the need to give fringe players a chance.
“We will assess tomorrow morning (Monday) to decide who starts and who we rest. All that hasn’t been finalised yet,” added Nees during Sunday’s pre-match media briefing.
Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba emphasised the importance of the match, especially with AFCON just a few months away.
“It’s an important match for us because it’s part of our AFCON preparations. Even though we are out of the World Cup qualifiers, we are taking this game seriously.
“We keep supporting each other in camp, and as a family, we are determined to do our best by winning matches,” said the Luton Town holding midfielder.
