Sanyatwe says he is humbled by ED’s decision to appoint him Sports Minister

HARARE – Newly appointed Minister of Sports, Retired Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, has said he is “humbled by the recognition and trust” placed in him by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“I’m humbled by the recognition and trust from His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, in appointing me to lead this important ministry” Sanyatwe said.

He made these remarks on Thursday morning at State House during his swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Mnangagwa.

“Allow me to thank His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, for appointing me as Minister of Sports.

“This is indeed a special recognition and I’m truly humbled by the confidence and trust he has placed in me to lead this ministry,” Sanyatwe told journalists.

Sanyatwe’s appointment as Sports Minister on Tuesday came as a surprise, following his sudden retirement as Zimbabwe National Army Commander with immediate effect.

He replaces Kirsty Coventry, who last week made history by becoming the first woman elected as President of the International Olympic Committee.

Sanyatwe’s retirement from the military has sparked speculation among political analysts, who suggest it may be linked to factional tensions within the ruling Zanu PF party.

Reports suggest growing friction between President Mnangagwa and his deputy, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, over who will lead party and the country in after 2028.

Sanyatwe is widely believed to be aligned with Chiwenga, who is reportedly eyeing the presidency.

Some analysts view his retirement from the army as a strategic move, potentially a “promotion by demotion.”
