Lynn Forbes, the mother of late South African rapper AKA, has shared a heartfelt message ahead of the festive season, revealing how she had learnt to juggle life in the midst of her grief.

AKA and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were shot dead outside the now-defunct restaurant, Wish on Florida in Durban, in February 2023. According to the police, AKA was the target and Tibz was collateral damage.

An inquest into his death continues.

In a post on Instagram, the rapper’s mother reflected on the importance of letting go of pain, forgiving others, and, ultimately, healing in a manner that honours both ourselves and the memories of our loved ones.

“It’s about choosing to let go of pain, to forgive where we have been wronged, and to heal in a way that honours both ourselves and others.

“When we come to accept that the behaviour of others has more to do with their internal struggles than with us, we learn grace,” she explained, inviting her followers to shift their perspectives as they navigate their problems.”

Forbes encouraged her followers to enjoy life even in the midst of the grief they endured.

“This season, I invite you to extend grace, especially when it’s hardest to do so. Even in grief or struggle, joy lives in life’s simple blessings; a smile, laughter, or the warmth of the sun,” she wrote, prompting a call to action for her audience to share their moments of joy.

“What brought you joy today? Share your moments and let’s celebrate life’s light together.”
