HARARE – Zimbabweans may soon be able to purchase fuel using the new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Dr John Mushayavanhu told legislators on Tuesday.

The governor told the joint parliamentary portfolio committees on Budget and Industry that discussions on what commodities should be paid for in ZiG were still underway.

“We are doing it gradually as we don’t want to rush to direct service stations to pay USD.”

“We start on taxes to be paid in ZiG, and include other commodities and people are going to be advised.”

“We need to do our work gradually and we are going to reach that situation where fuel is going to be sold in ZiG. There are discussions definitely on fuel being sold in ZiG,” he told the MPs.

Fuel is procured from outside the country.

Dr Mushayavanhu took the opportunity to implore legislators to be ambassadors of ZiG to promote its use and acceptance.

“I implore you Members of Parliament to be out ambassadors in your constituencies, tell people about the features of ZiG so that they are not duped, ” he said.

The new gold backed ZiG was announced early April with bank notes expected on the 30th. New Ziana

Zimbabweans are not embracing the ZiG, Mr. Mushayavanhu — they’re simply disposing of it!

It’s astonishing how easy it is to convince oneself to see what simply isn’t there. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) wants us to believe that the growing number of transactions conducted in the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) is a sign of renewed public confidence in the local currency. But let us not be deceived. The truth is far less flattering.
