Sponsorless start to 2024 PSL season for Dynamos and Highlanders?

Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Dynamos and Highlanders are set to start the 2024 campaign scheduled for 9 March without a principal sponsor.

This comes after their previous three-year deal with Sakunda Holdings expired in December 2023.

And almost three months down the line, the Kuda Tagwirei owned company has not yet announced a renewal.

The petroleum giants have remained silent on the deal’s potential renewal, although reports suggest discussions to enter into a new marriage could be taking place behind closed doors.

Sakunda sponsorship has been crucial to the two financially struggling giants who are incapacitated to run day to day operations without a helping hand.

The company had injected life into the two giants in 2021 by ‘oiling’ their coffers with a massive sponsorship package worth over US$5.3 million.

Each club has been receiving US$890 000 per year which was also paid out in $ZWL dollars equivalent.

The sponsorship package was meant to cover salaries, allowances, sign-on fees and the clubs’ operational costs.

Sakunda’s package also included an annual incentive for winning the league title to participate in the continental football competition, although none of the two giants won the championship.

Meanwhile, the season is starting on 9 March and Sakunda has remained mum on a sponsorship renewal.

The football community has also been left guessing if the company is still interested in sponsoring the country’s biggest and most followed clubs.

Without doubt, the two arch rivals are keeping their fingers crossed hoping for a new sponsorship deal with the ‘cash rich’ Sakunda Holdings.

They are hoping all will be in place by the time they lock horns on match day one in a blockbuster fixture set for Barbourfields stadium in Bulawayo next week.
