Standard Chartered exits Zimbabwe, ending 130 years in the country

After 130 years in the country, Standard Chartered is leaving Zimbabwe. The group has announced it is exiting a number of operations around the world, including Zimbabwe, to cut costs.

The bank said in a statement on Thursday that it will leave Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Jordan, Lebanon, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. Standard Chartered will also close its retail banking units in Tanzania and Ivory Coast, to focus only on corporate banking.

Standard Chartered Group CEO, Bill Winters, said: “As we set out earlier in the year, we are sharpening our focus on the most significant opportunities for growth while also simplifying our business.”

The markets that will be closed generated around one percent of StanChart’s total group 2021 income and a similar proportion of profit before tax. Stanchart operates in 59 markets and serves clients in a further 83.

The bank said that it had taken steps across the group “fundamentally transforming its digital capabilities in its African markets”.

In Zimbabwe, the bank had already significantly cut its branch presence to focus on digital services.

Standard Chartered is the oldest financial institution in the country, having first set up in 1892 as Standard Bank in Bulawayo. In 1969, the bank was forged from the merger of Standard Bank and Chartered Bank. It was fully incorporated in Zimbabwe in 1983.

The group will now look to find a buyer for the bank. In June 2021, StanChart Zimbabwe had assets of Z$17.8 billion. The bank accounts for just 3.25% of all bank loans on the market, according to central bank data.

In 2019, StanChart was fined US$18 million by the US government for violating American sanctions on Zimbabwe by handling transactions for state-owned firms and sanctioned individuals. NewZWire

Jerry ICee how about in other countries they are leaving…is it zanu too?

    • Jerry ICee

Shepherd Nyathi Are you denying the fact that zanu pf brought this poverty forcing people to seek better living in other countries? This migration is not voluntary my guy, but poverty driven.

    • Shepherd Nyathi

Jerry ICee I said what is the reason they are leaving…Angola…Ivory Coast…Tanzania…Cameron etc? The answer will give the reason why they are leaving Zimbabwe.

Shepherd Nyathi stanchart is moving to markets with higher returns. All these countries there are pulling out contributed only 1% to their global business. Our economy is not performing well how do expect a bank to make money better than other countries. Stanchart already issued a statement about their move

    • Raymond Chinoda

      Shepherd Nyathi
“StanChart cuts seven minnow businesses in Africa and Middle East
      LONDON, April 14
But the complexity of operating at that scale left the bank with a comparatively high cost to income ratio of 74%, which exiting sub-scale markets will help to improve, Tian said.

The markets being cut generated just 1% of total income in 2021 and a similar proportion of profit before tax, the bank said. StanChart is currently present in 59 markets overall and serves clients in a further 83.

It did not immediately comment on the number of job losses as a result of the cuts.”

    • Shepherd Nyathi

Raymond Chinoda so is that decision political or its strictly business?

    • Raymond Chinoda

Shepherd Nyathi that’s a business decision. Our economy is failing because of Zanupf failure for decades

    • Shepherd Nyathi

Raymond ChinodaRaymond Chinoda you are right …the decision is strictly business…nothing political or zanu about it.

    • Raymond Chinoda

Shepherd Nyathi Zanupf is in charge that’s why we mention it

    • George Zungunde

Patrick Kelly They have looted for 130years, now they are finding it difficult to do so hence they are leaving.

  • Shepherd Nyathi

Before you blame zanu try to read their statement. They are leaving a number of countries..Cameroon..Angola..Sierra Leone among others. They are simply consolidating and streamlining their operations to cut cost. Lets not be politically minded all the times…As they leave other banks have come in..Nedbank and Ecobank…so its nothing political..they probably can’t stand the competition.

    • Aaron Madzore

Shepherd Nyathi it a public relations statement kuti vawone kudzoka if economy improve

    • Shepherd Nyathi

Aaron Madzore the fact is they run away because they couldn’t stand the competition. They have slowly been overtaken by others like CBZ and FBC just to mention a few. They lost their market share to others..new entrants compounded their structural problems. They were too elitist on top of that.

BobandMargaret Rose Without being specific, banks closing branches is happening worldwide as on line banking is taking over. But a wholesale withdrawal from a country is a different kettle of fish.

    • BobandMargaret Rose

Duncan Rollo I was with them for many years and watched them starting around 2016 lay off the best people and shut down all their branches leaving a few overworked lower grade people who couldn’t cope. It was obvious that they were winding down. They did this while other banks were expanding, Yes expanding, thousands of people in Zimbabwe live on money sent by their relatives in the diaspora and need to go there in person, sometimes on foot, to collect their ‘usa’s’ in cash.

Most African economies are falling due to revolutionary parties that took over during the liberation of Africa. You think ZANU is the only problem? Naah almost everycountry in Africa is suffering because of parties that don’t want to leave the parliament. We’re so tired of these Political parties, they believe that they own our Countries because they fought a war with whites. Zanu is just the worst coz they even use bullets and death to remain in power. But it’s more than a Zim problem, even in SA They’re tired of ANC.

White governments were unfair to black people, but as far as progress, they did more progress than the Revolutionary Parties ever tried to do. These guys have failed failed and failed, they will fail and fail again until they fail!!

They’re leaving all wrecked economic systems. Every country they’re exiting has a very poor economy and clueless leaders.

  • Maron Zondi Motaung

Standard bank is closing operations not only in Zimbabwe but also in other countries around the world. So the people of Zimbabwe must not downgrade themselves and stop turning this into political affiliations. I think Zimbabwe is a better country where people has their own houses and land. They own the houses and cars which they enjoy. Nothing is of RDP. Zimbabweans are a more advanced nation and this makes it hard for them to operate in a low class environment. If you are too wise, if you are too clever with more of literacy in you mind, you end up having the mentality of exploring and exploration is done by people with global education as well high-tech in upstairs. White moved from Europe to Afrika not because they were poor or selfish, they explored the world and temporarily relocated to places where their explorations gave them better results. Exploring does not mean stupid, it is those with wisdom who do exploration. So standard bank might have suffered a blow in mismanagement, they even closed other branches in South Africa, Botswana and other countries around the globe.

The things that most Zimbabwean people have belongs to them even if the government poke their nose in. Houses, cars and some parts of the land belongs to the people of Zimbabwe without government giving them a hand of help. Be proud Rhodesia Zimbabwe. You only have a lot of enemies if you are too focused, wise, successive and educated with more than 60% pass rate in education.

Do not downgrade yourself good people

Standard Charterd Bank plc is to pay US$18 million in fines to the US government for violating American sanctions on Zimbabwe by handling transactions for state-owned firms and sanctioned individuals.

The bank is being fined for allowing 1,795 transactions worth close to US$77million.

Under sanctions first imposed in 2002, and renewed annually since then, the US restricts the movement of money owned by Zimbabwean state firms and individuals on its sanctions list.

This is the reason why it businesses are closing in Zimbabwe. The formal way of doing business is blocked by America and Europe so that the people of Zimbabwe will turn against their government.
