A gang of about 25 gunmen from KwaZulu-Natal, Zimbabwe and Botswana were intercepted by police while planning a cash-in-transit heist in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.
The confrontation happened in Rosettenville, a suburb in the south of Johannesburg and left 10 suspects dead and another eight arrested.
Police had earlier said eight suspects were killed, but the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, said at least 10 people had been killed in the shootout.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa, who was at the crime scene after the police watchdog took over, said five police officers were injured and a further two had to be airlifted to hospital.
Police Minister Bheki Cele who went to the scene shortly after the shooting unfolded, said police are on the hunt for the remaining suspects.
Cele confirmed their nationalities during a media briefing.
He described the suspects as heartless saying they were prepared to kill.
“The suspects shot and injured a pilot in a helicopter, before anybody did anything to them,” he said.
According to provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, police had placed the suspects under surveillance since last week.
On Monday, the suspects noticed that they were being followed and decided to rush to their safe house.
“There was money which they were observing and they were going to hit it, but our members said prevention is better than cure,“ Mawela said.
Police recovered five stolen vehicles which were used by the suspects, AK47s with double magazines and R4s. There was also explosives and petrol.
Another firearm was found on the freeway after the suspected robbers threw it out of the window when they were chased by police.

On 2022/02/21 information was recieved of suspects who were planning to go commit a cash in transit heist in the johannesburg area.
The suspects were gathering at the safe house in Friars hill road in the hill, Johannesburg, where they are meeting to finalise their heist plan.
Intelligence gathered to was that amongst the suspects there was an ex military soldier, a police officer from flying squad and a police officer from NIU
The information was given to the operational team. The team proceeded to the safe house, as the chopper was hovering over the safe house the suspects started shooting at the police chopper, the chopper then shot back at the suspects while waiting for the operational team to arrive.
A member in the chopper was wounded during the shootout with the suspects and the police chopper flew to milpark hospital. When the chopper landed it had multiple bullet holes on it. Joburg potter took over and assisted the members.
The operational team arrived and took over and engaged the suspects who continued shooting at the police. The suspects started drove out of the in a silver BMW X3 and continued shooting at the police.
The police returned fire and 3 suspects who were in the BMW X3 were fatally wounded, other suspects started jumping walls into the neighbouring houses were a shootout between poloce and suspects continued. 3 more suspects were fatally wounded.
More back up arrived and a white police nissan NP300 which came to give backup came across suspects busy hijacking a white Nissan NP200, the suspects shot at the police wounding 2 SAPS members and 1 JMPD member. All 3 officers were in one vehicle when they were shot and they were airlifted to hospital by chopper
Five suspects then jumped into the neighbours house and held the occupants of the house hostage, as the members penetrated the hoise shots were fired at the police and police. Returned fire wounding the suspects
A total of 10 suspects were arrested of which 2 were wounded and taken to hospital under polive guard.
