Opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has passed his condolence message to the Tanzanian people following the death of their President John Magufuli on Wednesday night.
Magufuli was possibly the single most vehement Covid-19 denier among global leaders but its suspected he died from the disease.
Officially his then Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan claimed that Magufuli had died of heart complications.
Chamisa, who leads the biggest opposition party in Zimbabwe passed his condolence to the Magufuli family and Tanzanian citizens.
“With sadness, I note the passing on of H.E @MagufuliJP of Tanzania. My sincere condolences to the Magufuli family and the great people of Tanzania.
“Our prayers are with them all during this difficult time.Wishing Tanzania a democratic and peaceful transition. RIP Mzee,” Chamisa wrote on his official Twitter handle.
Ugandan singer turned politician, Robert Kyagulanyi (better known as singer Bobi Wine) who leads the National Unity Platform (NUP) party also expressed his condolences on the passing of Magufuli.
“My heartfelt condolences to the people of the United Republic of Tanzania on losing President John Pombe Magufuli. Eternal repose,” he said.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa who used to share a diplomatic relationship with Magufuli said:
“My deepest condolences to the family of His Excellency President John Magufuli and the people of Tanzania. Africa mourns with you. May his soul rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, Suluhu Hassan (61), “a soft-spoken Muslim woman” has since been sworn in as Tanzania’s first female leader after Magufuli’s sudden death, also becoming the first female President in East Africa.
Under the Tanzanian constitution, Hassan, will serve the remainder of Magufuli’s second five-year term, which does not expire until 2025.
