The party now has three vice presidents, including Thokhozani Khupe.

The former Prime Minister, who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer, announced the appointments at a press conference at his Harare residence this morning.

Tsvangirai arrived yesterday from South Africa where he is receiving treatment. Scores of supporters thronged the streets of Harare to welcome him amid a heavy police presence.

In a statement seen by Nehanda Radio, Tsvangirai said “In line with the directive given to me by the National Council, I have now appointed Hon. Nelson Chamisa and Hon Elias Mudzuri as Vice Presidents of the party. The two will join Hon. Thokozani Khupe in assisting me in the execution of my responsibilities and preparing the party for the next election.”

Tsvangirai made the announcement a day after returning to Harvest House, the MDC-T headquarters where he held marathon meetings with his lieutenants. It was during these meetings that the party’s national council agreed to beef up the presidium.

Given Tsvangirai’s health, the appointment of Chamisa and Mudzuri as Vice Presidents will inevitably be seen in the light of the opposition leader trying to map out a succession roadmap. The decision to have three VPs for a party that criticises President Mugabe for having a bloated government remains puzzling however. Nehanda Radio
