Detective Darlington Mujabuki has been charged with culpable homicide and driving without a licence. National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident saying investigations were underway.

“We are investigating a case where a police officer in Beitbridge was involved in a negligent road accident which resulted in the death of two innocent people.

“The law is very clear. We will not tolerate such deviance. The police officer has pending criminal charges and definitely he is on his way out of the force,” he said.

Chief Supt Nyathi said the tragedy happened when Detective Mujabuki attempted to overtake another vehicle. His vehicle side-swiped another and veered off the road. It hit and killed two men.

“We regret the accident and the deaths. It is unfortunate we have to allow the law take its course and conduct disciplinary hearing before discharging such bad apples from the force,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.

The deceased were taken to Beitbridge District Hospital pending post-mortems. “We will announce the names of the deceased persons in due course,” Chief Supt Nyathi.

Detective Mujabuki has a pending case of bribery involving R30 which he allegedly committed at the border post recently. Last year, another man was fatally hit by a speeding car while sleeping a few metres away from the road near the same spot. The Chronicle
