By Andrew Moyo

It is a journey that started with thousands of aspirants but as the terrain got rough, many were swept aside and only those with immense talent were left in the race. The destination is now in sight and there are very few competitors left.

However, only one will arrive.

When auditions started early this year, thousands of hopefuls took part but only 18 finalists are left to battle it out for the ultimate prize.

The StarBrite competition reaches its climax with a two day finale, which is going to be held tomorrow, December 28 and on Tuesday at Long Cheng Plaza’s 1+1 Happy. A fashion show is scheduled to be held before the final performances.

Among the finalists are 11 singers, two poets, two in the special category and two dancing groups. All these acts have over the months showcased vast talent and with their various capabilities, judges are bound to have a difficult day in the office.

The judging panel includes Karin Davies, Hope Masike, Babongile Sikhonjwa, TAZ and Chido Musasiwa. The competition has tried to give everyone the opportunity to participate and this has seen two acts from the correctional system making it into the finals.

During the first night of the finals, contestants will perform songs from Hope Masike, the late Chiwoniso Maraire as well as those from the 70s with the aid of a live band while day two will see them performing their own choice of music.

The show will also have former contestants entertaining the crowd and these include Kireni Zulu, Brian Kadengu, Nyasha Timbe, Varaidzo, Luckmore Magaya, Nomore Dovi, Happias Msinde and The Transformed 4.

The winning acts will not only be honoured for being the brightest shining stars but will also walk away with various prizes that includes 30 000 bricks, cement, interior décor, residential stands, recording contracts, gift vouchers, holiday vouchers and hampers among other things.

StarBrite’s producer Lisa Nyatanga who works for Events R Us said this year’s edition has been action packed, coming with exciting twists and turns.

“Every year we have different kinds of talent coming through and this season has also had its own exceptional elements. This year we had more guitarists, we even had a painter in the mix and the talent on display is going to make it difficult to predict who is going to walk away with the ultimate prize,” said Nyatanga.

“We have also slotted in a mini-fashion show as a way of making our own contribution to the growth of local fashion designers.”

She went on to explain the reasons behind the selection of some of the prizes.

“We are trying to empower these artistes, which is why we are giving them prizes that comprise of residential stands and bricks, things that will benefit them in the long run,” she said. The Sunday Mail
