The driver skidded off the track killing four women, two of whom were pregnant, and two men. One of the men is the partner of one of the female victims.

Eleven other people were hurt in the crash at the Coruna race near the town of Carral in the Galicia region.

Spanish media reported that the driver, Sergio Tabeayo Sande, and his co-driver, Luis Prego, are from the area where the accident took place.

Both were treated for minor injuries and have been speaking to psychologists following the incident.

“One of the drivers took the track at a much higher speed than he should have and he veered off a curve, slamming into around 20 people,” a Civil Guard spokesman said.

Television footage showed the car careering off a woodland track and into a crowd of onlookers in a cloud of dust.

The vehicle was later towed away as an investigation into the accident got under way.

Towns near to the accident have held a five-minute silence in memory of the victims.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is from Galicia in the northwest, said on his Twitter feed: “The Coruna Rally is in mourning.

“My deepest condolences to the bereaved and wishes for a complete recovery of those injured.” Sky News
