The following is the audio of the public interview that Justice Samuel Kudya was subjected to by a panel of the Judicial Service Commission last month that was led by Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku.
Justice Kudya spoke of his fear of passing the capital sentence. He said: “I have the flair for commercial (law) work which is different and interesting (as opposed to criminal). It removes the anxiety of imposing capital punishment. One does not lose much sleep on such issues (commercial law) because they don’t affect the liberty of individuals.”
Justices Chinembiri Bhunu, Charles Kunofiwei Hungwe, Samuel Kudya, Lavender Makoni, Happias Zhou, Susan Mavangira, Nicholas Mathonsi, Tendai Uchena (all from the High Court) and Labour Court judges Justices Euna Makamure and Mercy Moya-Matshanga all battled it out at a Harare hotel in front of the panel.
