Audio: Justice Charles Hungwe Interview for Supreme Court

Last month High Court Judge Justice Charles Hungwe was grilled by Judicial Service Commissioners during public interviews to select Supreme Court judges.

Hungwe was grilled over an incident in which a woman died while in his company soon after they had slept together in Bindura. Nehanda Radio obtained the entire audio clip of the interview. Listen below.

“Have you ever found yourself in a situation that you felt was likely to compromise your integrity and was generally improper for a judge to be in? Tell us about it and how you handled the situation,” asked Chief Justice Chidyausiku.

“I think most of the issues relating to integrity, for me, what comes to mind is the case which involved my private life,” Hungwe said, hesitant at first.

“But l think the manner in which l handled it was at the beginning of this year, l approached the necessary parties which were involved and this included my wife and those of the immediate family of the deceased.

“I made the necessary approaches and explained myself and, in my view, that on its own, l demonstrated myself on how l approach ethical issues,” he added.

Justices Chinembiri Bhunu, Charles Kunofiwei Hungwe, Samuel Kudya, Lavender Makoni, Happias Zhou, Susan Mavangira, Nicholas Mathonsi, Tendai Uchena (all from the High Court) and Labour Court judges Justices Euna Makamure and Mercy Moya-Matshanga battled it out at a Harare hotel.
