The Miss Curvy fund-raising dinner held on Friday at Elcombe’s Restaurant failed to live up to its billing after attracting a poor attendance. The dinner was meant to raise funds for the Miss Curvy grand finale to be held on August 9 at Caribbea Bay Hotel in Kariba.

Event organiser Mercy “Catwalk” Mushaninga said she was disappointed  by the poor turnout.

“We were not happy with the turnout although we are grateful for the support we got from the people that attended the dinner.

“This was partly because we did not advertise the dinner and we planned it in a short space of time. We were offered free tables by the restaurant but we didn’t get much because of the poor turnout,” she said.

Mushaninga said they are still seeking for sponsorship from the corporate sector in order to make the event a success.

“Our plea is for the corporate sector to chip in and financially assist us. We have a budget for US$50 000 for food, fuel, accommodation and other things that are needed while the girls are in the boot camp,” she said

She said preparations for the final were at an advanced stage and 20 models will take part in the contest.

“Twenty models will participate on the night and they will get into the boot camp on August 4.

“We are also going to have a send-off party this weekend at Junction 24 where models will be mingling with the patrons,” she said.

The beauty contest that celebrates and recognises curvy African women will run under the theme “Supporting Domestic Tourism through Beauty Pageants”.

Urban grooves musician Roki, Judgment Yard, BaShupi among others are billed to perform at a bush braai pre-party, a day before the grand finale.

Mushaninga launched the pageant after she realised that most women with curves shied away from modelling because of the perception that the profession was for tall and slender women.

According to her, any woman who has natural curves, physical beauty with “brains” and keeps a flat tummy is eligible. The Herald
