Most observers viewed Khaya Moyo’s statements as a jab towards some officials who reportedly trying to undermine Vice-President Joice Mujuru, who is also from the province. Khaya Moyo was a guest at victory celebrations hosted by Rushinga legislator Wonder Mashange at Chimhanda Business Centre in Rushinga last Saturday.
Mujuru was not at the birthday celebrations and is reportedly not seeing eye to eye with politburo member Saviour Kasukuwere, who is linked to a faction with ties to the military. Mashange defeated politburo member Lazarus Dokora in primary elections ahead of last year’s general elections and is close to Kasukuwere.
Factional fights have been a common feature in Mashonaland Central for some time now with the Mujuru faction and those linked to Kasukuwere taking centre stage. The Mashonaland Central executive, most of which is behind Mujuru, last month suspended three vocal youths for six months for allegedly refusing to “play ball” ahead of the youth conference in August and party congress in December.
The three, youth provincial chairperson Godfrey Tsenengamu, his secretary for administration Kudakwashe Sintu and youth executive member Caleb Karima, who are reportedly close to Kasukuwere, maintain they were unprocedurally suspended as they were not informed of charges in time among other grievances.
“He talked about the need for unity, and touched on the importance of the Unity Accord which he said was irreversible. He then attacked some party officials whom he said were power hungry, emphasising that there was no room for ill-discipline in the party,” said a Zanu PF official from the province.
“Earlier Provincial Affairs minister Dinha had briefed him that Mashange was not working well with Dokora. He also had a briefing of the infighting in the party which is manifesting itself in squabbles in the youth structures.
“Those fighting Mujuru and other leaders were really put in a corner and Kasukuwere, who gave the vote of thanks, said the province was behind all its leaders in the presidium including President Robert Mugabe, Mujuru and Khaya Moyo.”
Lately Kasukuwere has reportedly been making overtures to Mujuru but officials say she does not trust him. Zimbabwe Independent
