Zimbabwe’s globe trotting president, Robert Mugabe, has left Harare for Equatorial Guinea to attend the 23rdOrdinary Session of the African Union. The summit is being held under the theme: ‘Agriculture and Food Security.’
The AU declared 2014 the year of agriculture and food security coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
The AU Joint Conference of Ministers of Agriculture which was held in Ethiopia in May this year adopted a resolution endorsing seven goals to accelerate agricultural growth and transformation in Africa by 2025 and the recommendations will be presented to the heads of state at the summit for consideration.
The AU heads of state are also expected to deliberate on the status of peace and security on the continent, the implementation of NEPAD projects, the African peer review mechanism and the African common position on the post 2015 millennium development goals as well as climate change.
Mugabe, who is accompanied by several senior government officials was seen off at the Harare International Airport by the Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Didymus Mutasa, Minister of State for Harare province Miriam Chikukwa, senior government officials and service chiefs among others.
