Energy Mutodi trial continues

The trial of Energy Mutodi, who is facing charges of defrauding home seekers, continued at the Harare Magistrates Court on Monday with revelations that the accused misappropriated funds.

In his evidence, former National Housing Delivery Trust (NHDT) chief operating officer Chandafira Pasipamire revealed that Mutodi used money contributed by home seekers to cover up an accident in which four people died in Gutu.

Mr Pasipamire alleged that after the accident, Mutodi came to their offices and took US$10 000 and never re-imbursed it.

Mr Pasipamire further alleged Mutodi was the only signatory to the main account of the NHDT after he removed two other signatories after indicating the trust was now his personal company.

He further told the court the company collected more than US$345 000 from people towards a housing scheme in Caledonia but no development was made towards the servicing of the stands.

It has also been revealed that members were supposed to be allocated their stands after paying premiums for 36 months, an agreement which has been breached by the accused.

However, some of the people who have been contributing since 2009 were never allocated stands.

The trial has been postponed to the 27th of June to give the state and the defence council time to choose witnesses who will testify in court.

There are more than 448 complainants and it has been proposed that the state will call a reasonable number of them for progress.
