Teaching posts corruption ring busted

POLICE in Nyanga arrested an assistant human resources officer with the Ministry of Education in Nyanga district where a well orchestrated corruption ring of senior Government officials in the district is believed to have been demanding bribes from desperate job seekers in the civil service.
The assistant human resources officer, Consilia Dzangare, will appear before Mutare magistrate court on June 17. Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean confirmed the arrest of Dzangare.
“Yes she (Dzangare) was arrested in connection with corruption ring of Government officials in the district believed to have been demanding bribes from desperate job seekers in the civil service,” said Assistant Inspector Clean.
It is understood that after a series of complaints from desperate job seekers, police set up a trap in which a Mutare Teachers’ College graduate approached the head of the Civil Service Commission panel of recruitment in the district Christopher Mutukumira.
Mutukumira facilitated a temporary teaching post for the Mutare Teachers’ College graduate at Chatindo Primary School in Nyanga South.
Unhappy with the post at Chatindo Primary, the Mutare Teachers’ College graduate went back to negotiate for a permanent post at a school in an urban setting.
He was told to pay $200 and negotiated for a reduction to $150.
The graduate handed over the $150 to Dzangare and police instantly arrested Dzangare upon receiving the $150. Investigations revealed that Dzangare was acting in cahoots with other six senior district civil servants from the Ministry of Education, Arex and the Civil Service Commission.
It is also understood that their modus operandi included reluctance to publicly declare vacant posts so that they would manipulate desperate job seekers into paying bribes ranging from $200 to $300.
The case comes at a time when Government is discouraging acts of corruption especially in public bodies as espoused in the contemporary economic blueprint – ZimAsset. Manica Post
