HARARE – A 31 year old man was found hanging from a tree along the Harare-Bulawayo road in Kuwadzana on Monday morning in a suspected case of murder. The man was identified as Portifa Mutera of Kuwadzana Phase 3 who was a taxi driver.
He is suspected to have been strangled using a cord made from strands of sack fibre before being hanged on a fig tree. The deceased’s vehicle, a Toyota Noah was found 500 metres away with its windows shattered.
The body was discovered by Admire Kamambo who sells portraits about 20 metres from the scene of the crime. The deceased’s uncle, Ngoni Mudimu said he had received a phone call from the victim’s wife informing him that Portifa had not returned home the previous night.
He said it did not take long before he received another call from the police informing him of the discovery of his nephew’s body. Police Spokesperson for Harare Province, Chief Inspector Tedius Chibanda said the case is being treated as a murder.
Kuwadzana residents expressed dismay at the incident, describing the spot where the vehicle was found as a haven for criminals.
Cases of armed robberies and murders of motorists and hitch hikers are on the increase with the police suspecting resistance to robber’s demands as the major cause of murders in robbery cases. ZBC
