Ailing cop demonstrates against council

An ailing Chitungwiza municipal cop spent two days at his employer’s premises demanding cash for medication. Edison Ndawana took his clothes and blankets to Chitungwiza municipality head office last week and camped at the town clerk, George Makunde’s office demanding payment for his medical bills.

The municipal cop has not been paid for the past eight months. Makunde was discharged from hospital on Tuesday and has been struggling to access medication owing to lack of funds.

Asked for comment, Edison’s younger brother Joseph who took his brother to the town clerk’s office , said:

“We wanted him to get his salary since he has not been paid since November last year. He was however paid US$800 for one month’s salary the next morning.”

This infuriated Joseph who said his brother owed Chitungwiza central hospital US$536. Edison’s wife Mollan Toma, who was also present at the town clerk’s office, said since last year they have been struggling to survive and fend for their children.

“We have been struggling to fend for our family since last year,” Mollan added that their children had dropped from school. Asked for comment Chitungwiza town clerk George Makunde said they had failed to give him his dues on Thursday since the treasury staff where not in the office.

“The treasury staff where not in office and the person who is the signatory was busy somewhere hence he could not aces the money on Thursday resulting in him spending the whole night at my door-step.”
