Chiwoniso MARAIRE is gone but her legacy will live on judging by top-notch performance that her children, Chengeto and Chiedza, gave at the Book Café last Thursday.
The two siblings, who were performing at a show dubbed “Chiwoniso Maraire Tribute and Benefit Concert”, lived to the task and relived memories of the late mbira queen.
It was probably the song “Mai Fambai Zvakanaka”, which drew tears from the daughters as well as the audience in attendance. The upcoming musicians upped the tempo forcing the crowd on their feet. They also showcased their dancing and mbira playing prowess, during the short but energetic performance.
Chiwoniso’s stepdaughter, Ammara Brown, rose the bar even higher when she gave a highly emotive but entertaining performance.
During her performance Ammara vowed to support Chiwoniso’s daughters, saying she learnt a lot from their mother, whom she referred to as her mentor and close friend.
“I was very close to Chiwoniso and she was my pillar of strength in times of need. She was always there for me. I am indebted to her. I want to help my little sisters if they decide to venture into music full-time,” she said.
The Chiwoniso Maraire Tribute and Benefit Concert was attended by many artistes who gave their time and energy for this noble cause. The money generated from the concert will help in the upkeep of the children.
“We are doing this for our sister Chi (Chiwoniso). This shows that musicians in the country are united. I am very happy with the turnout of the artistes,” said Hope Masike who was part of the performing cast.
Interestingly, the last time we saw Chiwoniso perform at the Book Cafe, she was donating her time, performing at the Edith WeUtonga Benefit Concert.
Clive Mkundu showed his guitar playing prowess when he played for almost every other musician who performed at the concert.
Some of the artistes who took part included Tariro neGitare, Edith weUtonga, Kelly Rusike, Dudu Manhenga, Comrade Fatso, Josh Meck, Pablo, Rute Mbangwa, Junior Bantan, Hope Masike, Victor Kunonga, Ba Shupi, Chikwata 263, Roki, Bernie Bismark and the Synergy Band, Sulumani Chimbetu, Mic Inity, House of Stone, Ticha Muzavazi, Mawungira eNharira, Alexio, Bob Nyabinde and Chirikure Chirikure.
