Eric Knight, Maridadi win MDC-T primaries

HARARE – Legendary Zimbabwe Radio and TV personality Eric Knight is well on his way to becoming the next MP for Mbare in Harare after powering his way to a convincing win over Sten Zvorwadza in MDC-T primary elections held on Saturday.

Mbare has been an opposition stronghold for over 13 years and Knight is almost assured of winning the seat. According to preliminary figures given to Nehanda Radio, Knight had 1190 votes to Zvorwadza’s 490.

Another legendary radio presenter James Maridadi, a former spokesman for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, will be the MDC-T candidate for the Mabvuku parliamentary seat after beating Timothy Mubawu. Maridadi secured 828 votes to Mubawu’s 300 votes.

One of the most anticipated primary election battles involving another radio legend in Ezra Tshisa Sibanda and Mark Moyo in Vungu (Midlands Province) is still to take place on Wednesday.

Writing on social networking site Facebook,  Ezra said “congratulations to Eric Knight for winning Mbare MDC-T primaries, well done. Vungu Constituency will be holding their primaries on Wednesday!”

Nehanda Radio has been told several sitting MP’s failed to win re-election in the confirmation exercise.

Willas Madzimure (Kambuzuma) Heneri Dzinotyiwei (Budiriro), Pearson Mungofa (Highfield), Margaret Matiyenga (Sunningdale), Elias Jembere (Epworth), Gift Dzirutwe (Glen Norah) all failed to secure confirmation.

Meanwhile the Deputy Minister of Women’s Affairs Jessie Majome secured her confirmation to be the MDC-T candidate for Harare West.

MDC youth president Solomon Madzore also triumphed over District Chairman Alec Masomera in the Dzvivarasekwa primary election.
