Liebenberg High School the only secondary school in Chivhu town was gutted by fire in the early hours of Wednesday. A building block which consists of 8 classrooms, a science laboratory and an SDA office were destroyed by the fire.
Pupils who arrived in the morning were shocked to find their school in flames. The only people seen trying to douse the fire using buckets and hosepipes were the two remaining white farmers De Klerk and Campbell with the help of their workers after being told there was no fire brigade in Chivhu.
Teachers were seen standing from afar doing nothing at all to put out the fire and the school children were all over the place, roaming aimlessly. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Teachers suspect one of the students who came to study in the evening might have cause the fire. However some students interviewed said the block gutted by fire was not used for evening studies, leaving many questions unanswered.
One the teachers who wanted to remain anonymous said he suspects foul play since the school leadership is under investigation for mismanagement of funds.
