Baby dumped at Masowe shrine in Highfield

HARARE – Residents in Harare’s Highfield suburb (Zororo area) woke up to the sad sight of a baby dumped in a maize field near the Johanne Marange Shrine. The foetus was discovered by an old woman in her maize field.

Gogo Magombo said that she was in the process of clearing her fields when she came across the foetus. “I went closer and saw the child’s head. I called someone who was selling vegetables here and we all agreed that it was a foetus and I rushed to notify the police,” she said.

“Vamwevarikushaya vana, vamwe ndivo varikuita vemazuva matatu iwe wopiwha chaiye asi wouraya,” bemoaned the granny. Scores of people gathered around the area to have a glimpse of the lifeless baby in the maize field.

A community health inspector said the foetus could have been three or four months old. There was no blood at the scene, suggesting that the abortion was done elsewhere and the area was only used as a dumping site.

Residents condemned such behaviour, describing it as cruelty and calling for a probe into the matter. “This is actually a bad thing, killing an innocent soul. Some are struggling to have these children yet others are killing them and the law must take its course,” said one resident.
