Grade 6 pupil caught with 2kg of mbanje

A Grade Six pupil at a primary school in Chatsworth, Gutu, was allegedly found with a 2kg packet of mbanje which he claimed was for sale to fellow pupils. The young boy alleged that his peers were already mbanje chain-smokers and the illicit drug was selling like hot cakes.

After being caught the young drug trafficker spilled the beans and implicated his father, Amon Magumo, saying he was the one who had introduced him into the business of selling mbanje.

The school’s acting headmaster Mr John Makendenge discovered the crime and reported the matter to Chatsworth police base where the boy confessed that the illicit drug was meant for resale at the school.

The matter was revealed when one pupil lost a ballpoint pen and started searching in his colleagues’ bags after which he bumped into the boy’s bag from which he found a 2kg plastic bag full of mbanje. The pupil alerted his teacher who also looked at the contents and reported the matter to the acting head.

Although Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero could not confirm the incident at the time of going to Press, police sources at Chatsworth confirmed the incident and said they had already arrested Magumo in connection with the case.

Magumo was in police custody assisting with investigations and was expected to appear in court.
