Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) National President Obert Masaraure and University of Zimbabwe student activist Pride Mkono survived a life threatening accident on the night of Friday 12 November 2010 along the Gweru- Bulawayo road.

The two student leaders were travelling to Bulawayo for the Zimbabwe Social Forum aboard a Mazda B18 around 2300hrs when the truck veered off the road. The two received treatment in Gweru but Pride Mkono is still being treated for internal head injuries by the Counseling Service Unit. The doctor advised the ZINASU President to take 96 hours bed rest to recuperate from a head injury he sustained from the accident, meanwhile Vice-President  Tafadzwa Kutya is Acting President.

The National President had no time to rest as he was summoned to court today together with Vice President Tafadzwa Kutya, activists Gamuchirayi Mukura, Tryvine Musokeri and Archiford Mudzengi for charges of addressing an “ unlawful gathering” on 16 June 2010. The five were remanded out of custody to 6 December 2010.

ZINASU bemoans the continued detention of Samson Nxumalo and Mudzengi who have been incarcerated for the past 45 days for skipping bail. The Union demands the immediate release of the duo so that they can be tried from home in the two year old case.

Meanwhile the ZINASU Gender office held two provincial female students’ summit for Midlands and Manicaland making it four out of the six administrative regions of ZINASU. The Female Summits are meant to improve female students’ participation in ZINASU activities.
