Rapper Yoz signs with Metro Studios

By Carter Chapwanya

Rapper Yoz has inked his signature with Metro Studios in a record deal that will see the musician releasing his much-anticipated debut album next month.

Yoz, real name Kennedy Simbanegavi, is one of the most promising hip-hop artistes whose upcoming album “Zvinyowani” has captured the imagination of the youths. His rhymes and baselines vary but have the same flow as that of the late Tonderai Makoni, who was affectionately known by his legion of fans as Kingpin.

“Yoz has just signed a contract for the release of his first album Zvinyowani and it will be in stores early next month,” said an official from Metro Studios who wanted to remain anonymous.

The Highfield-based artiste made headlines with the release of his controversial video titled “Akaka” a couple of months back. The video features young girls skimpily dressed (in butty riders and French knickers) that left nothing to the imagination.

Besides the semi-nude women, the song contains sexually explicit lyrics. Yoz has been featured by several urban grooves artistes such as Stunner on the song “Cash”, ExQ’s “Apa Pako” and the classical “Mabiko Kuchamhembe” featuring the comic duo — Extra Large among others.

In an interview the self-proclaimed Jay-Z protégé, said the album features songs far beyond anyone’s expectation.  He, however, said songs like “Akaka” were not on the 10-track album because he wanted to make music that appeals to everyone.

“The album is complete and yes, I have been signed to Metro for the album distribution and marketing,” said the 22-year-old rapper. The album is nothing like you have ever heard when we talk about Zimbabwean hip hop.”

The rapper has had a few brushes with the law. At one time, he was arrested for allegedly drugging his dancers. One of the female dancers in the video only identified as Penny made the report to police but later she withdrew the charges after confessing that the rapper had not paid them.

According to Penny, Yoz had promised to pay them US$30 each on completion of the video but he failed to do so. Yoz is making waves on Power FM with his first single “Wakamirira” that features Trevor Dongo and BG and Pinda Mukati.
