Victoria Falls-based 2008 Music Crossroads winner, Mokoomba Dance Group left the country yesterday for a one-month tour of Europe. The tour comes on the heels of another similar venture that the six-member group undertook last year.
A big send off for the group took place at Music Crossroads headquarters where Mokoomba held their last performance before they return home in August. Mathias Muzaza the leader of the group said he was happy to be going back to Europe.
“I am really excited and I can’t wait to land in Europe again. I wasn’t expecting it but because we are simply the best, the promoters in Belgium called us back after our splendid performance last year,” he enthused.
Music Crossroads Zimbabwe Director Mathias Bangure said this was another chance for Mokoomba to showcase their talent in Europe.
“To these guys I can’t say the sky is the limit because they can go beyond what they already are. I have overseen the transformation of many outfits from amateur singers to professional musicians but I can confess that these youngsters blew me away with their vibrant, energetic and lively performances and I know they will do something big in Europe,” he said.
The Tonga speaking group is funded by a Belgium organisation called Zig Zag. Mokoomba was formed in 2006 and was the winning group at the 2008 Music Crossroads inter regional competitions.
Hardly a month after they returned from their last Europe tour the group wrote their own success story with a release of an eight-track album titled, Kweseka meaning Drifting Ahead. Their video for the song ‘Messe Messe’ was also recorded in Europe. Their first destination is at Festival Couleur Café in Belgium on June 27, before participating at the Me You Zik festival in Luxemburg on July 3.
The group is also expected to perform at Afrika Festival Hertme in Holland on July 10, San Marino Festival, Italy on July 14, Colours Festival Ostrava, Tchequia on July 17, Pirineous Festival, Spain on July 22 before concluding their tour at Imagine Festival Trondheim, Sweden on August 2.
