Three police detectives die in crash

THREE Chegutu-based police detectives were killed while their workmate was injured after the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a stationary tractor along the Chegutu-Bulawayo road on Friday evening.

The detectives — whose names are still being withheld until their next of kin are notified — died on the spot. Their workmate — a general hand — is reportedly in stable condition after escaping with minor injuries.

Police spokesman Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday said the detectives were travelling from Kadoma after attending a colleague’s farewell party.

“The detectives — two of them male — were returning to Chegutu after attending a farewell party for a colleague who was transferred to a different province,” he said.

“They had reached the 110km peg when their Nissan Hardbody truck rammed into the stationary tractor which did not have rear lights or reflectors.”

Supt Phiri urged motorists to ensure their vehicles have reflectors. “Vehicles that do not have rear lights or reflectors should not be on the road,” he said. Sunday Mail
