UK group to launch Matabeleland Day

By Esther Gomo

Zimbabweans in the United Kingdom will come together for the official launch of Matabeleland Day at the Durning Hall Community Centre in Forest Gate, London on the 29th of May. Organized by Freeman Ncube, Conrad Mwanza and Vickie Nkomo the group is planning on launching various community projects for the Matabeleland region.

Speaking to Nehanda Radio, Nkomo one of the organizers told us ‘Matabeleland is not a tribe but a nation for all tribes. Let us celebrate this day together as Zimbabweans.’ She told us they are already inviting all those interested in partnering up, funding, or becoming members and volunteers for upcoming projects.

Helping Jairos Jiri, a philanthropic organisation set up in 1950 in Bulawayo, to support and train disadvantaged people, is going to be one of the first projects. “We are trying to raise money to send dozens of wheelchairs to the Jairos Jiri centre in Bulawayo, Nkomo said.

Guest speakers on the day will include Rev Zeb Manatse, Josh Chingwangwa, Dumi Senda and others. In the second half of the event from 5pm to 9pm there will be music and entertainment. Lined up for the celebration will be upcoming artists such as Nigel N, Flossie and popular DJ THB.

Things to look out for will include African food, organisations showcasing their materials and artists selling their albums. Nkomo also said stands are still available and there will be many things to be won on the day.

The organisation has already been given an office by the Newham and Tower Hamlet HIV AIDS prevention partnership in London and will be carrying out HIV and AIDS projects targeting Zimbabweans.
