Zimbabwe Warriors thrash Swaziland

By Edward Marange

Zimbabwe’s national football team the Warriors dispatched Swaziland 3-0 on Sunday in an African Nations Championships qualifier at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. Caps United striker Nyasha Mushekwi did the business as he scored twice to give Sunday Chidzambwa’s team a big win despite their financial troubles.

Reigning soccer star of the year Ramson Zhuwawo scored the first goal within 9 minutes of the match beginning as he latched onto a spill by the Swazi keeper Njabuliso Simelane following a shot struck by Mushekwi.

The result means the Warriors proceed to the next round of the Championships on a 5-1 aggregate after winning the first leg 1-2 in Mbabane two weeks ago. Financial problems had however threatened Zimbabwe’s preparations.

The Zimbabwe Football Association claimed it did not have money to pay for hotel accommodation for the players. As a result Harare based players commuted from their homes while only Highlanders captain Zephaniah Ngodzo, from Bulawayo and Mutare-based goalkeepers’ coach Brenna Msiska were booked into a hotel.
