Shingai Shoniwa the Zimbabwean lead singer of British indie rock band the Noisettes will be the host of a charity event to raise funds for children orphaned by HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe.
A spokesman for Ndoro Children’s Charities said the Zimbabwe Pearl Ball will be held on the 1st of April at the Westbury Mayfair Hotel in London. ‘The event will raise funds for a clinic and school we are building in Zimbabwe for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS,’ the group said.
About 250 guests including celebrities are expected to attend. There is a good chance legendary Zimbabwean singer Oliver Mtukudzi will perform on the day. Dancehall starlet Jusa Dementor is also set to perform.
Organisers say they are still looking for sponsors and advertisers for the event, as well as donations for its auction and raffle.
The purpose of the event is to also raise awareness and much needed funds for the Zororo Leadership Academy, an orphanage home, school and clinic for Children in Zimbabwe.
This project is scheduled to start in March 2010 and will require ongoing funding. The school will give 500 children access to education for the first time in the project’s first 5 years.
