Zanu PF should physically commit to peace

Zanu PF should physically commit itself to peace On Friday the principals to the Global Political Agreement (GPA), Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, President Robert Mugabe and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara will lead Zimbabweans in observing the three days of peace.

This follows a proclamation last week which designated the period between this Friday and Sunday as the days to mark the nation’s dedication to reconciliation and national healing. The MDC is joining other Zimbabweans in commemorating this rare opportunity that will see the people of Zimbabwe joining hands in denouncing violence and calling for national healing and reconciliation.

However, as the country observes the peace days, the MDC is disturbed by the continued disregard of the GPA and an upsurge in violence being perpetrated by Zanu PF and some mischievous officials in the inclusive government.

As we celebrate this occasion, Zanu PF has set up bases in some areas countrywide while MDC activists continue to be assaulted and harassed mainly in Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Masvingo. Ebba Katiyo of Uzumba in Mashonaland East province is battling for her life in hospital after she was brutally attacked by known Zanu PF supporters this month. Her crime was only that she was an MDC member.

Elsewhere, Zanu PF has upped its siege campaign on the MDC by intensifying its persecution of MDC MPs, members and officials against the new spirit of rapprochement spawned by the formation of the inclusive government. Zanu PF cannot hoodwink the people of Zimbabwe by preaching peace and acting war.

There must be commitment by all parties to genuine peace and reconciliation. Only then can we move forward as a nation. Together to the end, marching to a new Zimbabwe: MDC Statement
