Over 37 opposition activists have now been killed in a senseless wave of post-election violence directed by President Robert Mugabe's government.

The 84-year old dictator who is bitter over an embarrasing electoral defeat to arch rival Morgan Tsvangirai has sanctioned a campaign of terror targetting those thought to have voted for the MDC.

Before Tuesday the MDC had reported the deaths of 21 activists. Bulawayo South MP Eddie Cross told SW Radio Africa on Tuesday that although they had 21 confirmed death certificates another 16 had been killed within 48 hours this week.

He said 10 activists had been slain in the Centenary area while another 6 had been killed near Shamva. The death toll might actually be higher than the figures produced by the party he warned, since members of the CIO are fast tracking post mortems and forcing relatives to bury their loved ones secretly.

Mugabe's government is reported to be preparing for a presidential election run-off which by all accounts critics say will be rigged to save Mugabe and his colleagues from facing justice for human rights abuses.
