24 June 2008 By Staff Reporter Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai who won the first round of voting in the March 29 election has had to seek refuge in the Dutch Embassy in Harare. On Sunday Tsvangirai announced he was withdrawing from the run-off election after ruling party thugs attacked his supporters who were heading to a rally in the capital. Immediately after the announcement Tsvangirai is said to have spent the night at the Dutch Embassy although press reports later turned to say he was seeking refuge. Party officials have sought to downplay the incident and have refused to comment. Other officials within the party however told Nehanda Radio that Tsvangirai received credible information that a crackdown on party officials launched Monday was meant to also target him personally. His stay in the embassy has been described as precautionary. Around 30 heavily armed riot policemen beseiged the Harvest House headquarters and arrested over 60 victims of political violence camped at the offices. Most of them were women and children who fled Zanu PF political violence in the rural areas. Join the debate on this article in our forums today and share your views.
