22 May 2008 By Staff Reporter Zimbabwe’s biggest record producer Gramma Records is singing the blues after persistent electricity cuts meant they have failed to record artists on time and their schedules have literally skipped a beat. According to the state owned Herald newspaper the Msasa area of Harare has been plagued by the persistent power cuts. Gramma Records artists who are based outside Harare are being turned away at the last minute. Public relations officer Helen Venganai admitted the month long power cuts had paralyzed operations. ‘The non-availability of electricity has affected our normal business operations considering we have a big schedule to record artistes. We have gone without electricity for a month now and we are not sure what the problem is," she said. Even the generator on their premises is said to be incapable of meeting their electricity requirements. The company has put in arrangements to have some of its artists recorded at sister company Shed Studious in Greendale. "Shed Studios can only accommodate a certain number of artistes and we have taken a few to record but that is not what is supposed to be. We would like to thank our artistes for understanding our situation,’ Venganai said. "For those that are based outside town, we have been communicating with them so that they do not waste their fuel and money to come only to be turned away on the last minute," she added. A 10 year crisis of governance has ensured the country’s economy is on its knees. Mugabe’s government is accused of running down the country as corruption, greed and mis-governance permeate every sector of life. A violent land reform programme that rewarded Mugabe’s cronies is blamed for helping destroy the agricultural sector and creating serious food shortages.
