Arrested Biti charged with treason

18 June 2008

MDC Secretary General, Tendai Biti remains behind bars despite a High Court order that he be brought before a magistrate and be formally charged.

Since his detention on Thursday of last week, and despite claiming that they have legitimate charges against Mr Biti, the police have failed to present these charges before a magistrate as required by Zimbabwean law.

Instead the police have added to the list of ludicrous charges that they allege Mr Biti to have committed. These now include treason, insulting the president and prematurely announcing the results of the March 29th elections. This regime must be ashamed.

This shameless behaviour of this regime is further evidence of the Mugabe regime's complete disregard for the rule of law and the fact that they are determined to thwart Morgan Tsvangirai's election campaign at every level. The regime knows for a fact that Mr Biti is an indispensable asset of the MDC.

The failure by the police to bring Mr Biti to court means his continuous detention is unlawful, even with the the context of Zimbabwe's repressive laws.

MDC demands that Mr Biti be immediately released unconditionally so that he can continue with his personal life and legitimate political activism as we finish this era of dictatorship and bring hope to the people of Zimbabwe.- MDC Press.
