The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged the Zimbabwean government to abandon plans for the presidential run-off on Friday 27 June and postpone it to a later date.

Ban Ki-moon said the state-sponsored violence had led the opposition to withdraw from the run-off. Ban told journalists, 'I would strongly discourage authorities from going ahead with the runoff (vote) Friday.'

He added that a run-off without the opposition would, 'only deepen the divisions within the country and produce results that cannot be credible.'

Zanu PF however on Monday seemed eager to encourage MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai to formally withdraw from the race so they could declare Mugabe the winner by default.

On Sunday over 2000 Zanu PF thugs helped by riot police invaded the Glamis Arena in Harare to disrupt a planned MDC rally. Images of the marauding gangs beating up innocent people have generated international outrage.
