Johannesburg – Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s wife was among those who gained millions of dollars from illegal diamonds mined in the east of the country, according to a US cable obtained by WikiLeaks.
Central Bank to lay off 1600 workers
The central bank will lay off 74 percent of its workers as part of a drive to return focus to its core role as a monetary authority, the bank’s chief said in a statement on Tuesday. Staff levels at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe grew more than 10-fold between 2003 and 2008.

After it was falsely reported that he was dead, the great American humorist Mark Twain famously said, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”. Today (Thursday) Zimbabwe was flooded with SMS messages claiming that Gideon Gono, the powerful Zimbabwean Central Bank Governor had been in an accident and died. But a call to my sources at the Reserve Bank only confirmed that the Governor had indeed been in an accident on the road from Chiredzi writes Denford Magora.
Reports of Gideon Gono death are false
Harare and London temporarily became the rumour capitals of the world on Thursday evening as Zimbabweans home and away spread false messages that Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono had died in a car crash. Only one website Zimeye.com fell for the prank falsely reporting that the central bank chief had died in a car accident along the road to Chiredzi.
