According to an eyewitness, the goods train which was coming from Gweru rammed into the passenger train which was stationary at the siding, causing it to derail. The passenger train was coming from Chiredzi and going to Bulawayo. Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana confirmed the accident, but said details of the mishap were still sketchy.
“The police are on the ground and we are still to get a full report of the accident,” Inspector Chademana said.
In recent years, the national rail carrier has been hit by a number of serious accidents. In October, 2000, 15 passengers were killed near Dete after a passenger train smashed into a goods trains.
In another disaster, 42 people were killed and 68 injured in February 2003 when a passenger train collided with a freight train near Hwange.
Last week, a passenger train derailed at Dete injuring 35 people. Efforts to get a comment from the National Railways of Zimbabwe were unsuccessful.
