Mashakada to hold charity show for Salvation army

03 June 2006

CEPHAS Mashakada goes to Chinhoyi on Sunday for a fundraising show for the Salvation Army church, as a way of giving back to the community that reared him.

"The show is just the first one in a series of many that we will hold for various churches as a way of giving something to those who own the songs that we record. "Most of our songs are from the Salvation Army hymn book hence the need to begin with that denomination," said Mashakada. "I grew up attending that church and I learnt most of the songs there so it is befitting to start from there," he said.

An official from the church, Nyasha Sundika, yesterday confirmed the development saying the funds would be used to buy a church bus. "The show is on and Mashakada will be supported by Timothy Ngwenya and a number of church choirs," said Sundika. As a way of ensuring that the event is true to the dictates of the church, Mashakada said there would be a discount on entrance fees for those in church uniforms from any denomination.

Mashakada said this was not the first time he was involved in fundraising events for churches after a similar event was held in Seke together with the lat e David 'Mr Bulk' Chiyangwa in 1999. The proceeds went towards the construction of a church in Seke. Besides honouring churches, Mashakada would soon start holding shows to fundraise for charity as a way of giving something to the society in general. He said there would soon be a facility where some of the royalties from his music sales would be directly channelled towards charitable organisations.

The musician also added that such programmes would be a way of thanking God for taking him through the long music journey that he has travelled since venturing into music in the 1970s. "I have seen a lot in the music industry and as a Christian I feel that there should be a time to thank God in tangible ways. It does not mean that I have not been saying thanksgiving prayers to my Lord but doing so through visible means is always important. "I feel that the little success I have enjoyed should be shared with the society at large," Mashakada explained.
