17 Members of Chitungwiza province ditch Mutambara breakaway faction

By Farirai Machivenyika
03 June 2006.

SEVENTEEN members of the pro-senate faction in Chitungwiza province resigned on Thursday, citing the camp’s lack of capacity to unseat the government.

The resignations come hard on the heels of the suspension of Shakespeare Maya, the erstwhile deputy director of elections, for a variety of charges, among them that he was power-hungry, having allegedly improperly sought to be elevated.

It was not immediately clear whether the 17 would defect to Morgan Tsvangirai’s camp or launch a new party altogether. The 17 include Milton Bene, Chitungwiza provincial secretary, Themba Themba, secretary-general, his deputy, Obert Manzunzu, a Mr Matanhire, chairperson for Chitungwiza district, Mr Kandawasvika, deputy organising secretary for Zengeza and Rosemary Nyarire, provincial executive member.Others are: Brighton Sahaga, district youth secretary, Silus Mutepaire, youth chairperson, Thomas Rwafa, treasurer, Victoria Theu, youth secretary for gender, Florence Mushove, Brian Dzvimbo, youth secretary for publicity, Lilian Dzura, Daniel Musonda, Peter Kafumu, director of elections Chitungwiza and one F Kawara.

In their joint-resignation letter, the 17 said: “We, the undersigned, regret to tender our resignation from your faction of the MDC with immediate effect. We would have liked to travel together much longer, but unfortunately conditions do not permit.” The letter, addressed to Mutambara, did not say what the “conditions” that prompted them to resign were. Maya said their decision to quit the faction was based on the realisation that it had no capacity to remove Zanu PF from power.“The reasons are too many to list. We had to look at the plight of Zimbabweans and the situation in the country.

We have realised that we have to move forward in order to unseat the Zanu PF government,” he said.
Maya, a political turncoat who once belonged to the ruling party before he formed and later dumped his own party, the National Alliance for Good Governance (NAGG), for the MDC, said his suspension was inconsequential since he had already decided to move ahead.“That is of no consequence, I had already decided to move on in pursuit of the struggle. Besides, the said charges are trumped up,” Maya said, without elaborating. On whether he would join Tsvangirai’s faction, he said: “I am still an MDC member and I will vote for the MDC in any election. We believe we have to fight the struggle as MDC.”
Maya, whose political history is mired in controversy, has unsuccessfully contested several elections under different banners from 2000.

In the suspension letter, Chitungwiza chairperson and House of Assembly representative for Zengeza, Gooodrich Chimbaira, told Maya: “The Chitungwiza provincial management committee has decided to suspend you from the party with immediate effect pending your appearance before the disciplinary committee.”
Maya was accused of causing divisions within the faction of the opposition party was bluntly told: “Your level for power hunger is a cause for concern for several party members in the province”.
He was also accused of failing to “execute party duties diligently since your election into office as the secretary for the province.” Chimbaira also stated in the letter of suspension that one of the reasons they had suspended Maya was because he was strongly linked to Zanu PF.

“The party strongly suspects that you are strongly linked to the enemies of the party, especially Zanu PF, to divide the people of Chitungwiza by engaging in clandestine activities,” Chimbaira said.
He said Maya would be summoned to appear before a national disciplinary committee for a hearing. Responding to the resignations yesterday, Chimbaira said his faction would nonetheless forge ahead with their plans. “Some of those people had pending disciplinary actions against them. As a party, we are recruiting new members every day and those who want to leave should leave,” he said.Spokesperson for the anti-senate faction and Kuwadzana legislator, Nelson Chamisa said they would welcome those willing to join their camp.

“We have always said that there is only one MDC under Morgan Tsvangirai and we will welcome any new members. Our struggle is based on numbers and the more we have, the merrier we become,” Chamisa said. A number of senior members have ditched Mutambara’s faction for the Tsvangirai camp, including former pro-senate national chairperson and Mbare legislator, Gift Chimanikire, Binga member of the House of Assembly, Joel Gabuza, Samuel Sipepa Nkomo and Kwekwe’s Blessing Chebundo, among others. Our sister paper, the Sunday Mirror, has reported that the Tsvangirai faction is on a crusade to entice some senior pro-senate members to join their camp.Their targets include, Gibson Sibanda, pro-senate vice- president, Paul Themba Nyathi, director of elections and Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, deputy secretary-general.
